Students Receive Bibles
Posted by Kay on Apr 20, 2009 | Comments OffChildren at Calvary Temple School received brand-new, hard-cover bibles in March. The bibles were a gift from children at Life House church in Hagerstown, MD.
Last year, in the Fall, we received a call from Dave Rodriguez, Children’s Pastor at Life House Church – Bethel. Dave wanted to know if there was some item that would be very special, that children at Life House could provide for our kids in Uganda.
Of course, many items are special to children like ours, who live in abject poverty. Toothbrushes, uniforms, shoes, socks, underwear, etc. – but we finally settled on bibles – the eternal, empowering, Word of God. The bibles are essential to the spiritual nurturing of children. As they learn to read it for themselves, these children become increasingly able to live their faith, and to know what is right. As they grow up in the Word, they will recognize false teachings and be equipped to guard their hearts.
The kids at Life House took on the challenge, and raised over $900 so that others their age could have a bible to call their own. Individuals elsewhere gave as well, and enough money was raised to purchase over 120 bibles!
The funds were wired to Uganda by Friends of TOUCH, and the bibles were purchased from the Bible Society, in Kampala. The old paperback classroom bibles had been shared and used so much they were falling apart. The new bibles are all hard-cover. Students received either a NKJV or a Lion Children’s Bible of their very own – with their name written in it!
Truly something special, the bibles are kept at school. So many times, when the children receive a nice gift and take it home, it is quickly taken away from them. Sometimes the gift will be sold, or it is simple stolen. After all, they are “the least” that Jesus spoke about – small and without recourse. That is the second gift the children received – a way to hold on to their bibles. Each child’s name is written in his or her bible, and the bible is kept in a safe place at school. Each day, the bibles are handed out for use, not only for a personal devotional time, but also as text books.
There are still many children who have not yet received a bible of their own, and as new children enter the TOUCH program, there will always be a need for more bibles. You can provide a bible (sometimes as many as four, depending on the exchange rates and type of bible) for just $10. Or you can designate a gift in any amount to the bible fund.
Yes! I want to provide bibles for kids!
