All About Gaps

There’s nothing quite like a smile from a child just losing his or her baby teeth. It’s kind of like a bonus smile – a grin within a grin.

Other gaps aren’t so cute. All of the children at TOUCH face a deep chasm between them and their future. Parents who loved them have died, there is little income for food and basic needs, and the cost of education seems unreachable.

By providing school fees, food, and basic needs, you bridge the gap between extreme poverty and a hopeful future, and even between life and death.

By providing love, support and encouragement, through sponsorship or through the staff at TOUCH, you fill the gap where family is missing.

By interceding in prayer, advocating justice, and fighting for the well-being of children, you stand in the gap as a child’s defense and protection.

Morris says, “After the release of the PLE (Primary Leaving Exam) results, I received my results and sat home. My father had no more money for me to join secondary school. I sat home with much sorrow and cried. A few days later while I was at my neighbor, I heard on the radio that there are vacancies at Calvary secondary school. The next morning I decided to go there and explain my case of not having school fees and I wanted to continue studying. Mama TOUCH welcomed me and accepted my request. From then I started studying and the TOUCH office has been supporting me with all school requirements and fees. Today my heart is full of joy because I completed Senior four and have passed well.”

Katumba’s father had no future plans for him after primary school and told him to drop out, but TOUCH was there to bridge the gap. His talent at soccer developed as he joined the school team and received encouragement. During his holiday last year, Katumba was invited to join the Uganda under 14 soccer team to compete in Nairobi, Kenya. He thanks Mama TOUCH and the whole staff for the effort put toward his well being. Even his father has a smile. Katumba is now a born-again Christian and loves Jesus Christ.

Aisha joined TOUCH Program when she was seriously sick and had no hope of continuing with studies be- cause of lack of funds and hospital facilities. With little income, her mother thought she might die, but also wanted her daughter to study. TOUCH members in Uganda have been always praying for her, and TOUCH has paid her school fees and also her hospital bills. She is fed well during her stay at school and she completed primary seven, though during final exams she again became ill. TOUCH arranged for a doctor during exams, and the staff prayed for her recovery. Aisha is here thanking God for the mercy shown to her through TOUCH program.

This year, Friends of TOUCH introduces the GAP Fund – to cover the cost of sending children to school who do not yet have sponsors. We need to raise $10,000 by the end of January to cover school fees, medical care, and basic needs for nearly 100 children over the first term of school in 2011. The fund will also be used to pay the extra costs associated with a new school year (Uganda starts the new school year in February).

It is vitally important that we continue to stand together for children in need. Thank you for your prayers and support!
