Far-Sighted Love
One year ago today, the earthquake in Haiti forced us to look beyond ourselves. Even more, the people who needed help were within our reach. We heard their stories, and the media helped us to get to know individuals with stories of trauma, despair, survival, and hope. The response was great, and still there is so much to be done.
This is why we have to look beyond ourselves. Not just in Haiti, but in every place of suffering, we find the opportunity to become instruments of change. We are at our best when we look beyond ourselves to help others.
Here are some things we can do every day to expand our view:
- Pray for someone you don’t know.
- Look up a country that you’re unfamiliar with and find out a few key facts about the people there.
- Listen to another person’s story – in person. Someone you wouldn’t normally talk to. Practice your listening skills.
- Share the experience. Do something that helps you understand what someone else is experiencing.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll take a closer look at each of these. I hope you will join us for the adventure!
